Bradford files reports that the Athletics and Diamondbacks are working on a deal to send Haren to the desert:

The deal could take away a non-Johan Santana option for both the Yankees and Red Sox.

And that would make Johan Santana a bit more valuable.

If the Yanks don't get Santana, why do people (including Yankees management) think that they need to go out and overpay for another pitcher? Haren and Bedard aren't going to come cheap. Why not just make a commitment to the young guns? Not only are they WAY cheaper, but they can be as good if not better than some of these guys that the Yanks will end up chasing.
