Hampton's Hamstring

The Braves idea to bring back Mike Hampton in 2008 isn't going well:

The Braves left-hander injured his right hamstring in the first inning of his first start in the Mexican Winter League last week. He left after one inning, and it's uncertain if he'll pitch again this winter.

"We don't know when he'll come back [in winter ball], if at all," Braves general manager Frank Wren said. "There's only four weeks left in the season, and hamstring injuries usually take a while."

Hampton, 35, has missed the past two seasons recovering from elbow surgeries on his pitching arm, and the Braves hoped he could make seven starts in Mexico to better gauge the likelihood of having him back in Atlanta's starting rotation for the 2008 season.

Am I the only one that thinks little Mikey doesn't want to play anymore?

You're probably not the only one, but I'm not in agreement. I think if he didn't want to play anymore, he wouldn't. He would retire. He has nothing to gain by trying to come back. Even if he is successful, he will never receive a big contract again. Maybe I'm optimistic, but I think he's trying as hard as he can to come back. It's just that his body is not cooperating.

Yeah, he is Pavano at this point. Should have stayed with the Rockies, a chance at a ring and those great school.

No, he should have stayed with the Mets (or the Astros, for that matter). A flyball pitcher in Coors Field pre-humidor is what truly started his decline. And, Mike might not know it, but there's good schools in New York... ;-)

Ehh. It's looking like 2008 will be like 2007 for Hampton.

But I'm curious by your headline. Is there a better "idea" than having him rehab? I don't think waiting longer here would be a good idea, seeing as they'll want him to pitch next year and he hasn't thrown a ball in like 9 months. I mean, he's getting paid $15M next year whether Atlanta asks him to rehab and play or not, so I'm not seeing the alternative plays here.
