Santana on the Block
The Twins and Johan Santana reached an impasse over the length of an extension:
The Star Tribune had reported that Santana countered the five-year, $93 million offer by asking for a deal similar to the seven-year, $126 million deal Barry Zito inked with the Giants last offseason. But a person familiar with the discussions said Santana's comparison to Zito is only in reference to the seven-year framework. Santana told the Twins he is looking for a six-year extension, and since the Twins were only offering four, the sides agreed the team should begin exploring trade options.

Why not split the difference? 6 at 111?
For a while now I have been saying the Red Sox should go after Santana. My potential trade would be Lester, Crisp, Hanson, Del Carmen and one or two other minor leaguers (no to Buchholz, no to Lowrie and No, no, no to Ellsbury), but if Santana wants a six year deal I think we can forget about the Red Sox becoming involved.
If you are Santana or his agent, how can you not compare yourself to the Zito contract? Even before Zito's poor '07, Santana was a much much better pitcher.
I think the real question is will Dice-K be better than Santana in the long run? (I think theo has made up his mind) I have no doubt the Yanks will sign him for top dollar, I hope no one bought a Phil Hughes jersey for X-mas.
Also if Doug Mirabelli gets a free ride on the Sox for another season I am going to take a swan dive off the monster. Hopefully the Sox land one of the catchers from Texas for Coco.
Is Boras Zito's agent too?
s1c: quantity does not equal quality. no Bucholz, no Ellsbury, no Johan.
My understanding from Cot's baseball contracts and a recent report from Ken Rosenthal is that Santana has full veto power over any trade, so all this talk of Santana being on the trading block is a bunch of hot air in my opinion. I don't see that Santana has much incentive to approve a trade when one year from now he can choose his own destination and realize all the financial benefits from that decision.
Santana said that he's willing to go to the Yankees or Mets. I haven't heard anything about him being willing to go to the Red Sox. So him being on the trading block is perfectly valid.
Michael: If Santana cashes in now, he's assured of getting a 9-figure contract. If he waits, he might get more money on the open market at the end of the year, but then again, he could get hurt and end up taking a far smaller payday. It's about security.
Boomer - normally I would agree that quantity does not equal quality, but this is the Twins.
Hmm, a gold glove caliber center fielder, do you think they could use one of those? A left handed pitcher with a very controllable salary who has proven that he can be a winner, a lefty to replace a lefty.
MDC has proven to be a valuable middle relief pitcher and oh yeah, another controllable player for the next few years.
Hanson is the only non-quality player that I have listed, which is why I would also add another minor leaguer to the mix, maybe a Devern Hansack or David Pauley who have had cups of coffee with the Sox with mixed results. Of course I still think that if Johan is looking for six or seven years (35 or 36) the Sox will not be in the market. If he would take 5 years then I think they would play.
As for Buchholz - with 2 starters in '08 being AARP candidates, I just don't see them allowing double H to leave.
Buckley of the Boston Herald agrees with me about Lester and Ellsbury though he would allow Clay to be sent packing.
