On a Diet

Via MLB Trade Rumors, Miguel Cabrera is working out so he's in shape for his new team:

''This winter, I'm really going to work on my physical condition in order to be in the best shape possible for spring training,'' Cabrera told LasMayores.com. ``I've been at it for four weeks now at a gym that specializes in professional athletes, and I'll be there until the spring.

''I'll keep at it in order to get to spring training in the best shape possible, to have the best season possible for the team I end up on,'' he said.

He also says he's willing to move to the outfield or first base. I'm guessing he wants out of the Marlins as soon as possible, and is doing everything to raise his value.

I've been wondering how much of Cabrera's reported lack of work ethic and surliness have been due to playing for Florida. I'm not saying that I want my beloved Red Sox to trade for him, but I'm curious to know what he'd be like as one of the Crimson Hose.

Best case scenario: He'd be a decent teammate and passable defensive 3B whose 40+ homers and .960+ OPS playing half his games at Fenway would more then balance out his defensive inefficiencies.

Slightly-worse case scenario: He'd be Manny Jr., right down to his inevitable move to LF after the Original Manny leaves or retires. Still great offensively.

I'd love for Boston to trade for him.

Wouldn't Youkilis at 3rd and Cabrera at 1st be a better defensive arrangement?

Maybe, but the question becomes whether or not 3b-Youk, 1B-Cabrera is actually better then the other way around. Youkilis isn't the best in the game with the glove at first base, but he's pretty good. And even if he wasn't I have trouble believing that the Sox would move a guy who just won a GG at first to 3rd. They're progressive, but c'mon...this isn't like Jeter's gloves, Youk was at least above average at the position.

IMHO, and this isn't based on any real data, Youkilis is a pretty mediocre defensive 3B. I'm also wondering, given how bad Jacobs was for the Fish this year, whether Cabrera wouldn't benefit a bit from a guy who actually knows how to field his position taking his throws across the diamond. I don't know if that would show up in RZR or PBR, but it's something...

Youk might be mediocre at 3B but Cabrera's awful - I always wonder about guys who are now willing to do what it takes - The NYY should definitely hand out more big contracts to old guys - it worked so well before
