A-Rod/Boras Split

The NY Daily News reports that Alex Rodriguez is talking to the Yankees without Scott Boras:

According to the first source, the Yankees are waiting for Mariano Rivera to sign a new contract before finalizing any plans with Rodriguez, who is expected to take a 10-year deal worth roughly $275 million. That would be about $75 million less than Boras has been looking for, though most industry insiders believe there was never going to be a $350 million offer out there for Rodriguez.

Interestingly, I pegged A-Rod's worth at $27 million over eight years. If this deal does indeed happen, not a bad estimate. Again, if this is a true story, it looks like Alex wants to stay in New York enough that he's willing to admit his mistake in not talking to the Yankees before opting out. I would also guess his relationship with Boras is close to over. However, I'm also taking this story with a huge grain of salt.

Alex and Scott could've planted the story to drive up Alex's price, by claiming that there's at least a10 year $275 million offer out there for him.

Adam:

Alernatively, the Yanks could have planted the story to drive down the Marlins' price re Cabrera.

Alternatively, Robert Goulet could have planted this story just to mess with everyone.

(and yes, I know he's dead, but it was in his will).

Don't underestimate Robert Goulet's powers from beyond the grave.

Or Boras's PR abilities.

The New York Times is now reporting the same story, based on an anonymous Yankee source.

It's kinda sad. I'm a Yankee fan, and I was an ARod fan this year, as were a lot of Yankee fans. He really was able to turn a lot of boos into cheers with his monster year. He and Boras threw all that good will out the window and now ARod will have to start from scratch. He's going to hear quite a few boos to start the season.

This from Ken Rosenthal on foxsports.com. Negotiating with A-Rod without Boras would violate the CBA. I don't know why none of the writers reporting this story didn't bother to find this out. A-Rod could fire Boras and negotiate without him, but if Boras is still his agent, this would violate the CBA.

Frankly, I'm not going to take Rosenthal's word for this. Michael Weiner (cited in the article), okay, but I'd like to see the wording in the CBA that says a player cannot meet and negotiate with a team himself, once he's designated an agent. I know a team cannot negotiate with *another* agent, that's clear in the CBA. But where does it say the player may not meet with the team?

Andruw Jones brokered a deal once before without Boras, he had his dad do it for him.

That Rosenthal article is pretty slippery, doesn't really explain anything. If A-Rod can "designate" Boras, why can't he just "de-designate" him? All kinds of variables can cause a change in circumstances. Somebody's blowing smoke, but at this point no clue who.

From what I understand, the CBA merely prevents a team from talking to any agent other than the one the player designates. No bar on a player speaking directly to the team.

This Yankee fan sure as hell wont be booing Arod.
What the hell do I care what games he plays, successfully or not, to try to get the best deal that he can? I would do the same.

I'll cheer or boo him based on the effort he puts forth, and to a lesser extent, the results. On the field.
