The One that's Going to Get Away

My latest SportingNews.com column discusses why the Marlins made a mistake by not signing Miguel Cabrera to a long term contract. It's also the reason why the Yankees should be willing to give up a front line pitcher to own Miguel. He has a very good chance of producing a Hall of Fame career and is just entering his most productive phase. In fact, if I were running the Red Sox, I'd be willing to trade Ellsbury and Lester to get Miguel, providing he would be willing to sign a long term contract. In the Yankees case, he would go a long way toward replacing A-Rod's power, and for the Red Sox, he would take Manny's spot when Ramirez's contract is up.

Players like Cabrera are rare. Acquiring one for prospects is more than worth it.

You're probably right, but as a Sox fan that's a hard one to get my head around. Ellsbury is positively electric...

I think that the Red Sox and Yankees are wary of a player who has ballooned in weight since his debut, and who, despite his prodigious batting skill, appears to be an indifferent if not poor fielder. If he ultimately will have to be a DH/1B, and both teams have plenty of that type player, it's not the "slam dunk" it might appear to be at first blush.

Ellsbury played over his head this year. He's not as good as he looks, and Lester has showed almost no signs of being a good pitcher, let alone an elite pitcher. I'd do that trade in a heartbeat, if I were the Sox. Assuming I could get a Schilling-esque weight clause in Cabrera's contract.

I am extremely way of Cabrera's indifferent work habits and lousy defense. Boston already has a bit of a logjam on the bad side of the defensive spectrum, and they are well aware that you have to be a truly scary hitter to be a superstar at 1b or DH. And they already have two of those (Ortiz and Ramirez, who should be DHing).

Why is it when a player like Cabrera becomes available the only two teams that are discussed are the Yankees and the Red Sox? There are other teams in the league, remember?

I guarantee that in 2 years time we'll thank god the Sox didn't trade for Cabrera, just like we do now with Tejada. He's the next Dmitri Young. yeah he has a sweet swing, but that's about it. His one tool ain't gonna make him any fans on an elite team.
