One More Season

Greg Maddux signs with the Padres for $10 million. Greg needs eight wins to pass Clemens for 8th place on the all-time list.

*sigh* I was hoping they'd hit an impasse and that he'd be back on the market, but the Padres--having Paul DePodesta in their employ--obviously can read a statistical line and realize that a one-year contract to keep an average*, durable major league starter is about as intelligent an investment as can be found. The fact that it's Greg freaking Maddux is just a bonus. I still haven't forgiven the Dodgers for letting him go to the Padres for peanuts while throwing money at Juan Pierre. If the Dodgers had had Maddux for all of 2007, they might well have won the division.

*--using that term loosely. His ERA+ was only 98, but that was due largely to a very few, very bad outings. Taken as a whole, I'd still call his overall season above average.

I think Mad Dog Maddux will catch Rocket. Nice deal by the Padres.

Does anyone think the Rocket will get a deal? Maybe my Astros bite, but even they've been burned and have the 'personal service' contract once he retires.

I like the Hendricks Bros , they're not as nasty as Boras, but those guys lose 35+ mil in contracts if these two quit. Ouch.

If these two boyfriends end up in LA, I'll be shocked. But then again it happened in Houston a few years ago.

I can't see Roger pitching anymore. He wants the big bucks, which is fine even pro-rated. The problem is, he physically cannot pitch even a half season without breaking down. The spirit may be willing, but now the flesh is weak.
