Abreu in Right
The Yankees picked up Bobby Abreu's option for 2008.
"Bobby Abreu possesses a unique skill set and has proven to be a durable and reliable asset to this club," general manager Brian Cashman said. "Consistency has been a hallmark throughout his career."
Exactly right. Bobby's power has fallen off, but he still does a great job getting on base. It will be interesting to see if 2007 proves to be a fluke or the start of his decline. For one year, the Yankees can afford to find out.
A reasonable move, but the Yankees still need to find more power to complement all the high OBAs. They just filled one of the corner spots where teams usually get some of that power; their two potential left fielders have decent power (Matsui) or none at all (Damon). 3B is open, as we all know; as for 1B, God only knows.
I'm sure Cashman has ideas, and he certainly has the money to bring them to fruition... but he clearly has some work to do on lineup construction.
Abreu might get on base but he is not a good outfielder. Hopefully he's not going to be their power source.
Cashman said the other day 1b will be Giambi/Duncan/Phillips. That leaves 3rd for upgrade. I think Girardi will go small ball the power void is a big hole.
Great move - definitely bring back more over the hill guys for giant contracts - it really worked great last year
