End of the World

Manny Ramirez talked to the press today:

"We're just going to go have fun and play the game," he said. "That's it. If we go play hard and the thing doesn't come like it's supposed to come, we'll move on. We'll come next year. Why should we panic? We've got a great team. If it doesn't happen, good. We'll come next year and try to do it again.

"We're confident every day. It doesn't matter how things go for you. We're not going to give up. We're just going to go and play the game, like I've said, and move on. If it doesn't happen, so who cares? There's always next year. It's not like the end of the world or something."

My guess is Manny won't be running for president of Red Sox Nation any time soon.

Who gave Tavarez the day off?!?!

Shouldn't we be happy that Manny at least knows what the series score is? That gives me hope in itself

Of course, Manny also said yesterday that he'd trade his postseason records for a trip back to the World Series. I'm shocked that's not getting more attention.

Yes, my sarcasm is intended.

It's always hard for the pasty, pudgy sports-obsessed fan when it dawns on him that the millionaire athletes he fawns over don't live and die by wins and losses the way he does. I try to live by this rule: don't care about a sports team with which I have no tangible involvement more than the members of that team. In other words, watch and cheer but maybe dial the histrionics and pyschodrama down a few notches.

What I mean is, Manny is right, even if it was kind of dumb and bad timing to have this quote surface now.

In a very important way, Manny's attitude is dead-on. Baseball is unique, in that you have to be relaxed in order to perform well. Nobody screams or rams into lockers before a baseball game. You need to be under control; if you're too tight, you're going to swing and miss every time, or hit the mascot with your fastball.

How many times have you seen Manny go to an 0-2 count and work a walk or get a base hit? It's his attitude, as well as his skills, that allow him to succeed in that situation.

I'm not a Sox fan, but I agree with the previous poster. Manny's attitude improves the chances of winning games. If the players put the weight of the world on their backs, then they are more likely to press and come up empty. Now I'm not saying "be lackadaisical," because obviously the player needs to be focused and concentrate during the game, but they have to concentrate on the next play, not the ultimate outcome. So, I find Manny's comments refreshing.

I gotta agree with jvwalt, CL, and Matt, despite being a Red Sox fan. I

Manny may be the somewhere in the neighborhood of having the right approach to the game. However I think he arrived there by generally being clueless about what's happening around him than deeply contemplating life and baseball. The man doesn't even keep track of the pitch count when he's batting.

It's about time an athlete said what was on his mind rather than parroting an idiotic set of sports cliches.
