Sox Rock
The Red Sox win by a final score of 10-3. Eric Gagne loaded the bases in the ninth but didn't allow a run. It was total domination as Boston out-hit Cleveland 12-8 and out walked them 8-2. Those eight walks are impressive, as the great strength of the Cleveland pitching staff this season was preventing the base on balls. The Indians get a second chance at winning home field advantage tomorrow night as Carmona faces Schilling.
Sabathia's had two outings in a row with really bad control, after being a master of the strike zone throughout the regular season. I realize the Red Sox and Yankees have very patient lineups, but usually Sabathia would take advantage of that by getting ahead in counts. Now, he's not. Playoff nerves? Fatigue after pitching a league-high 241 innings?
If I'm Francona, I can't justify using Gagne again all year. He's got to have a shoulder injury he's not disclosing. I'd make him have it checked out, and replace him on the roster (Tavarez or Snyder) if there is evidence of any damage. At least they could eat up innings if needed.
