Colorado Wins

Pat Burrell flies out to center to end the game. A fine pitching job by the Rockies staff. The bullpen walks two but doesn't allow a hit. Francis out-pitches Hamels. Each suffered one bad inning, but Hamels' was worse.

I expected the Phillies to win this game, but the Rockies to take the next three. Defeating Hamels was a huge boost for Colorado. They just need to win two out of three against three starting pitchers who are less than stellar.

re: phils v. rockies 2007 much like twins in 2006 and johan santana

the phils in 2007 are a lot like the twins in 2006--decimated by injuries, the starting staff was basically down to one stud, johan santana, and after that was pretty thin. They were counting on santana winning twice last year. when santana lost the opener, the door was opened for the twins to lose.

same with the phils this year. Cole Hamels, who struck out 13 batters in just five innings last friday night when I and my twin boys went to the game at CBP, should have won easily, but he had one bad inning and gave up three runs. Otherwise, he was steller--but he lost 4-2 to Francis, who outpitched him.

The phils vulnerability to lefties was also displayed in this game. they are about .500 vs. lefties on the season.

though rowand and burrell kill lefties, they both homered and the rockies seemed not to suffer.

it's really up to kendrick now.

but jamie moyer has it in him to pitch a good game, even if it's in coors stadium.

also lohse has pitched very well of late.

and the phils hit very well at coors.

so while the door is open, it will depend on

(1) do the rockies win today at cbp and go up 2-0, or do they let the phils back in with life at 1-1?

(2) does kendrick come up big or blow up?
