Carmona On Top

Fausto Carmona does Josh Beckett one better by throwing eight shutout innings against the Royals, taking over the American League lead in ERA. His ERA drops to 3.07, while Santana gives up four runs in eight innings to raise his to 3.14. He's had an amazing turnaround from his 1-10 season a year ago, and now he's one of the leading candidates for the Cy Young award. I'm sure his 1.21 ERA down the stretch will impress voters, too.

Superb outing by Carmona, to be sure. However, I'm not sure it "does Beckett one better". Beckett shut down the Yankees in a hugely important bounce-back game, whereas Carmona had to shut down the vaunted Royals offense. I don't think this vaults Carmona to the front of the Cy Young race, either - right or wrong (and in my opinion, wrong), voters care about wins. Plus, that win against the Yankees today (picking his team up and all that stuff) on national tv probably gave Beckett a big boost.

Well, I disagree. "One better" just means he gave up one fewer run than Beckett, which is factually true. Wins wise, Carmona has 16 to Beckett's 18. Negligible difference at this point. Both teams will make the playoffs. Whether Carmona wins the Cy Young Award or not will depend on the Indians' performance.

Maybe if ESPN wasn't so concerned with slobbering all over boston/new york matchups, they could spend some time paying attention to a one-two punch in Sabathia and Carmona that has seen I think 9 out of Sabathia's last 10 outings allowing two runs or less and Carmona having the best ERA in the league not only since the all-star break, but also for the whole season. Honestly, what is it going to take for this team to get the recognition it should have?

chris

what is it going to take?

more than a miracle because your team is not in new york or boston and espn really doesn't care about any other teams besides the cubs
