Turnbow Turnaround

The Pirates comeback with three runs in the bottom of the eight off Derrick Turnbow to defeat the Brewers 7-4. Derrick gave up two hits and two walks to raise his ERA to 4.48. There's a big disconnect between Turnbow's ERA and his batting average allowed, .183. He's allowed a .353 batting average with runners in scoring position, which is a big reason for the disconnect.

In Turnblow's seven worst games this year, he gave up 13 walks and 23 ER in 2-2/3 IP - a 77.63 ERA.

Ned Yost's greatest failure this year is his inability to take Turnbow out of games when it is obvious that he is ineffective. Easily three and possibly five of those games would have been wins had Yost yanked Turnbow after his second baserunner allowed. If the Brewers do not win the NL Central, this will be the single biggest reason.

I will also place blame on Doug Melvin (GM), for not trading Turnbow this past off-season when it was obvious already last year that Yost had no idea how to properly use him. It's like giving your toddler some blocks to play with but finding out that half the time he throws them at the TV. You try to correct it the first time or two, but when it's clear that he doesn't get it, you take away the blocks.
