Three for the Runs
Utley, Burrell and Howard batted 2-3-4 tonight, and those three were responsible for a 6-5, ten inning win over the Rockies. Utley reached base three times and scored twice, including the winning run. Burrell and Howard each went deep, Pat tying the game in the seventh with a three-run homer. And Howard doubled down the left field line to bring Chase home in the tenth and win the ballgame. It's a strong heart of the order, the three combining for 84 home runs and 297 RBI.

If a team in the NL wild card race could get even moderately hot, they might walk away with the prize. Over the last ten games, the top four contenders have gone 4-6, 5-5, 5-5, and 6-4. Parity strikes again.
The Rockies have now slipped four back. With three teams in front of them, it looks next to impossible. But I like the team for the future. The humidor has made Coors more of a "normal" park, which means the pitchers don't get discouraged as much. And the young position players look solid. With a +50 run diff this season, a young and improving team, and no particularly fearsome competition in the NL, Colorado could easily slip into the playoffs next year.
