AL Division Decisions

The American League Division races look quite settled this morning. The Red Sox, Indians and Angels each own at least a seven game lead, with a magic number no more than eighteen. The Red Sox, with a .604 winning percentage and a magic number of seventeen, have a 13% chance of winning at least seventeen games, meaning the Yankees wouldn't need to lose to put the Red Sox on top. Since 8/15, the Indians are the best team in the majors with a 15-4 mark, but LAnaheim is second in the AL, going 13-8 and the Red Sox are tied for third at 12-8. All that's left for the three teams is the race for home field advantage and trying to avoid an historic collapse.

If the Yankees win tonight, I think it's all over in the AL. I know they would only have a three game lead and two in the loss column. But Seattle is a .500 team that lucked into the wild card race, and they're rapidly collapsing back to their true level. They really have no business being in the hunt with New York.

Detroit is a better team, but they've fallen back. Hard to see them catching the Yankees when they're not playing particularly well right now. After tonight New York has 12 of its remaining 22 games against KC, Baltimore and Tampa Bay. I don't see the Yanks folding against that competition.

Would that it were so Casey, but unfortunately, the Yanks are below .500 this season against Baltimore and Tampa Bay. Yeah, I know, pathetic.

And though they've beaten up on KC, KC has actually turned into a decent team. Take out their first two months, and they're actually good.

I wouldn't punch their playoff ticket just yet.

The Yanks' +141 run diff will tell. They're the second best team in the game, with by far the best offense (nobody's within fifty runs of them). If they get a three-game lead tonight, I don't see them coughing it up.

If Seattle wins, it's still a race. No question this is the Mariners' most important game of the year. And it's equally important to any fan who wants to have a reason to watch the AL for the last three weeks.
