Figuring Out Clemens

Ichiro Suzuki came into the game 2 for 20 in his career vs. Roger Clemens, but gets to the Rocket today. He picks up three hits in four innings, including a home run to help the Mariners to a 5-1 lead over the Yankees in the top of the fifth. That's it for the Rocket, as Mike Mussina starts the fifth. I wonder how often a 300-game winner has been relieved by a 240 game winner? It's the first regular season relief appearance by Mussina.

A good trivia question then...
What are the most combined career wins by pitchers in a game?

Assume both pitchers on same team as Clemens/Mussina. In 1927 Walter Johnson in final game PH for Tom Zachary after Zachary gave up Babe Ruth's 60th HR. Zachary had 186 W & Johnson had 417 for combined 603 W. Johson was 2nd to Wes Ferrell as pitching hitter, he had 42 hits in 1925 for a .438 BA.

At the end of their careers, while pitching with the Indians, Steve Carlton, during his short-lived stint in the bullpen, was brought in to relieve Phil Niekro. It happened on April 8, 1987. The Indians won, 14-3. It was Niekro's 312th win; at the time Carlton had 323 wins, so their total was 635.

Great captcrisis comment. Actually mine above Walter Johnson didn't pitch, just PH. Wonder if Elias can solve this for all.

Thanks Bob.

I bet there is a greater total, involving Cy Young at the end of his career. The other pitcher would only need 130 or so wins to exceed the Niekro - Carlton total.

Steve Carlton in those last years was really morbidly fascinating, wasn't he!
