What's He Werth?

Jason Werth singles off Billy Wagner to open the ninth as Wagner goes for a six out save (he gave up the homer to Burrell in the 8th. With one out, Werth steals second, then third, and scores on a Iguchi pinch-hit single. That ties the game, a blown save for Wagner. The Phillies keep running wild, as Iguchi steals second, forcing the Mets to walk Rollins and face Utley.

Update: Utley drives in Iguchi with a hard single to right, and the Phillies win 11-10, sweeping the Mets! They're just two games back, and the crowd is going wild in Philadephia.

There's been three of the five 1-2 series completed this week, and three turned out to be sweeps. The Padres go for their sweep tonight to try to make it four of five. And in three of these (Yankees, Padres, Phillies), the team needing the sweep for the comeback is getting it. That's fun baseball.

You mean Phillies keep running wild

I wish to god I could have seen this game. Effing work. The last two nights have been the two best Phils games of the season, bar none, but it looks like this tops them all.

Go Phils!

five days ago, i was wondering why people were still questioning the mets ability to make the playoffs, since they had a seven game lead and we're playing decent baseball. the last five games have really helped to clear things up. ugh.

That was a wild game! I wonder if this will energize the Phillies and put them over the top. I couldn't help but notice that in both the Yanks-BoSox series and the Phils-Mets series, the 2nd place team swept it.

Strange that the two last games have been one-run wins for the Phils over the Mets. For most of the season the Mets couldn't lose a one-run game, and the Phillies couldn't win one.

The most ominous development for the Mets is the downhill slide of Billy Wagner. That 4.63 ERA in August and all the talk about a dead arm don't seem reassuring. Wagner just turned 36 and the 56 appearances this year may finally be wearing him down. His pitches were all over the place in the eighth and ninth, and he got hit hard.

If the Mets lose their key weapon in the close games, they really don't look any better at all than the Phillies and Braves. The three teams have very similar run diffs.

Wagner is going through a "dead" arm and Randolph sends him out there for a two inning save? Didn't make it of course but isn't that a bit of a panic move, especially considering you are in first place?

I was watching the Mets broadcast and just waiting for Cohen, Hernandez or Darling to question Randolph's use of Wagner in this game. They really didn't challenge it directly, though they did talk about how Wagner hadn't recorded a six-out save since Mr. Cartwright drew up the rules.

This will probably be the last time Wagner will be asked to get six outs. And the Mets may start warming up the bullpen behind him even in short stints. Cohen (I think) commented that there was no safety net for Wagner today. The bullpen did nothing but watch as Billy struggled badly.

As a Red Sox fan, I don't think the sweep was fun at all. I'll have to listen for days to fellow fans whining how everything is falling apart.
