The Yankees defeat the Red Sox 4-3. Alex Rodriguez hits his forty fourth home run of the season to make the score 4-1 in the seventh, and it proves to be the game winner as Youkilis hits a two run shot in the eighth to bring the Red Sox within one. But Rivera comes in and retires the last four Red Sox batters of the game, and the Yankees move into a virtual tie for the AL Wild Card with the Mariners. If New York can win tomorrow, the possibility of a division title comes back into play.

Sixty home runs is still a possibility for Alex. The record for home runs in September is 17 held by Babe Ruth and Albert Belle. Ruth set that record in 1927, the year he hit 60.

It'd be a shame if the Yankees miss the post-season when he's having such a great year.

And someone, somehow, would point the blame at Alex if the Yankees don't make it.

You look at the run diffs, and there seems to be no way Seattle can hold off the Yankees. Depressing.

The Mariners visit New York next week. If the Bombers sweep, it may be all over but the shouting in the AL, with the four postseason teams set.

I'd be surprised if the AL playoff first-round matchups aren't Boston-Cleveland and New York-Anaheim. As a Red Sox fan, I wasn't concerned with this series for the division. I think that's over, but I hoped they could take 2 out of 3 and damage the Yankees Wild Card hopes.

I just don't see Detroit or Seattle getting the Wild Card.
