More Short Shutouts

Chris Young and Ubaldo Jimenez matched short shutouts last night, each going six innings, throwing 95 pitches and walking two. Jimenez, however, allowed just one hit as he struck out nine, while Young allowed three and struck out seven. That puts Young at the top of the Short Shutout leader board.

So the game came down to the bullpens, and this night it was the Rockies who kept the Padres scoreless. Hawkins, Julio and Corpas combined for two hits and three strikeouts over their three innings as the Colorado offense got to Cla Meredith in the seventh. It looks like teams are no longer mesmerized by the missing Y. In 2006, Cla allowed just 30 hits in 50 2/3 innings. This year it's up to 72 hits in 57 2/3 innings. The Rockies take the game 3-0.

"The Colorado offense got to Cla Meredith"

Yes, and no. The grounder off the bat of Torrealba was hit so softly that the Padres couldn't turn the DP. Stewart's grounder probably ends the inning if Marcus Giles is playing 2B instead of Geoff Blum, who just doesn't have the range.

Umm, Atkins singled off of Cla to start the 6th and then he walked the next hitter (Hawpe). Two on, no one out, he created he's own mess.

That's "getting" to Cla Meredith, is it not?

Right, he created the mess, but if Torrealba hits the ball harder or Blum can play a decent second base, Meredith also gets himself out of it.
