Special Ks
The Oakland Athletics and Texas Rangers did not put a lot of balls in play last night as the two teams combined for 35 strikeouts in a thirteen inning, 9-7 Oakland victory. The Rangers picked up 21 and the A's 14. Every pitcher struck out at least one batter, and seven batters struck out at least three times. There were 119 plate appearances in the game, and with twelve walks and two hit by pitches, forty nine of them resulted in no balls in play. But batters hit .371 when they put the ball in play.
Oakland blew an early 7-0 lead. They scored six in the first and one in the third, but did not score again until Piazza singled with two out in the 13th to drive home the go-ahead run.
It was the second time this season teams combined for 35 K in a game. It took Atlanta and Cincinnati 15 innings on 7/18.

I wasn't aware they were supposed to start calling balls a 2 feet out of the strike zone up and inside as strikes now, but evidently THIS home plate umpire got that memo.
