Another Save

Mariano Rivera comes on in a one run games and retires the side in order on three strikeouts in the ninth. Mariano now has a 1.35 ERA since the start of May. He looked like he might be done in April, but he's bounced back very well. Maybe the Yankees should give him an extra month of spring training to prepare himself from now on. Over the last two seasons, opponents hit .300 against him in April, .217 the rest of the way.

The Yankees are now tied with Detroit for the wild card, pending the outcome of tonight's game against Tampa Bay.

And everybody thought the Yankees were dead. Everybody still needs to remember that Championships are NEVER won in April.

Except for the 1984 Tigers. And the 1982 Brewers and Braves. And the 1990 Reds. And...

And the 2005 White Sox!

Many have thought and hoped that Mariano was done for quite a few years. Since he has been expected to not only accumulate a few GF's, Saves, K/BB, multi inning appearances, etc. during the regular season as well as the post season, he stopped throwing in the off season a few years ago. Adjustments possibly could be made to his winter plans, but as of now, Rivera is unemployed after this season.

Good point, Susan. Mariano and Posada both wanted new deals before the season started. Given the GM's vision for next season's roster, young arms in the rotation and pen, and Torre aversion/destruction of young arms, Cashman really has his work cut out for him. If anyone is benefiting from the decline of big Stein it is B Cash.
