Winning and Losing Bases

Andy Pettitte and Jesse Litsch are pretty even, both have allowed five hits and three walks. But the Blue Jays are leading 3-1 in the top of the sixth as they've turned two double plays to reduce the number of Yankees base runners, and advance on two stolen bases without a caught stealing, rare against Pettitte.

Update: The Yankees drive Litsch from the game after 92 pitches. He gives up a single and walk to start the inning, the Downs comes in to allow an RBI single to Matusi and a one-out double to Cano, putting the Yankees ahead 4-3. That give Cano forty one hits and twenty five RBI in his last twenty three games.

Melkey Cabrera picks up his third hit of the game to drive in Cano and make the score 5-3. Cabrera is now batting .373 since the start of July (50 for 134) with fourteen multiple hit games.

Yankees just took a 4-3 lead on an RBI single by Matsui and a two-RBI double by Cano. It's hard to keep that lineup down (drat). The inning is still going.

Now it's 5-3. Cabrera singled in a run.

By the depressing way, if the Yankees hold on to this lead, they move into a tie for the wild card.

Toronto gets two on in the bottom of the sixth and Pettitte is lifted. Reed Johnson hits a shot - right at A-Rod to end the inning.

Hill hits one out in the bottom of the eighth to make it 5-4. Big crowd in Toronto today.

Vizcaino makes a mess but gets out of the inning with no more damage. Yanks 5-4 top of the ninth.

Rivera ties the bow on a wild card tie with Detroit. My day isn't going so great.

Casey, I'm sure you're disappointed, but if you watched the game, surely the vintage Rivera performance was worth the cost!
He struck out Rios, Wells, and Thomas, the last after he thought he had strike three called a ball inside, then threw the cutter on the outside edge to put the Hurt on Thomas. It makes a baseball fan happy to be alive.
