A Study in Contrast

Shaun Marcum and Roger Clemens took very different paths to very similar results tonight. Clemens went six innings tonight, and as he's been doing lately didn't strike out many batters, retiring just three without contact. The Blue Jays were making contact, and the balls were falling for hits. Nine of twenty three balls in play against Clemens went for hits, but the Blue Jays only managed one run against the starter, and that was in the first inning as Alex Rios scores after a triple. That was the only extra-base hit Roger allowed, and he only walked one batter.

But while he was lucky in not allowing a lot of runs, he was unlucky in having the Yankees score for him. Marcum is now pitching in the bottom of the seventh without having allowed a run. New York came into the inning with just two hits and two walks, and three double plays by the Blue Jays wiped most of that out. But Jeter and Abreu single back-to-back to open the seventh.

When the Yankees signed Clemens, they didn't think he'd be bringing his Houston run support with him.

Update: A-Rod drives a double over Reed Johnson's head to drive in both runners and give the Yankees a 2-1 lead. That's 92 RBI on the season for Alex.
