Electing the Commissioner

For those with Baseball Prospectus subscriptions, my latest column explores how to elect the next commissioner.

from the article:
"Can we get to one commissioner, to which both the CEO of Major League Baseball and the head of the Players Association answer?"

David, it sounds like an autocracy. No thanks. I prefer the dichotomy of power.

Zealot,

I think you miss the point of the article. That dichotomy of power would still exist. I'd want the commissioner to not be a driving force in the game as Selig is, but a balancing force in the game, stepping in to labor relations only when the two sides get out of balance.

You need a driving force to keep the game at or near its peak...you'd still not have a wildcard or interleague play without a gutsy fella doing what's best.

so more like an arbitrator??

Well, an arbitrator implies someone with final say in a dispute, and maybe that's right. Maybe moderator is more appropriate.

Right now, when the players get disciplined by the commissioner, it's seen as an employer/labor dispute when it really should be seen as "game" player dispute. I would hope that removing the commissioner from the owners to a certain degree would make that process a bit easier.
