Retaining Wedge

Eric Wedge received a contract extension through the 2010 season today. With the extension to Travis Hafner, the Indians are doing a good job of positive feedback, rewarding management and players for success. The Indiansa are 14th in the majors in winning percentage since Wedge took over, .505 (373-366).

I think they should have waited till the end of the year--then they could have given a better evaluation. As it stands now, I don't think this team is on a par with Detriot--and they may not even beat out Min. If that happens Wedge should be replaced. A guy like Joe Girardi would make this team a winner.

Extending Wedge when they did was exactly the right move. Shapiro extended him because he wants Wedge to continue to manage irrespective of where the Tribe finishes this season. Part of the reason for the timing, according to Shapiro, was he wanted to do it while the Tribe was doing well not later if things suddenly go south.
