DiMaggio Blogs

Well, before there were blogs there were diaries, and Joe DiMaggio kept one. There's nothing juicy in them, but I liked this one:

He chafed at the benefits piling up early in 1991 to honor the 50th anniversary of his 56-game hitting streak. "If I thought this would be taking place due to the streak," he wrote on Jan. 14 with sarcasm (or was it disdain?), "I would have stopped hitting at 40 games."

The hand-written pages will be up for auction at some point.

He insisted his appearance contracts call for him to be introduced as "Baseball's Greatest Living Player."

What arrogance!

For a real putdown, DiMag went to a 1983 World Series game at Phila Vet Stadium as an Orioles VP. He jumped into a VIP elevator as the door was closing. The teenage girl elevator operator re-opened the door and ordered DiMag to get off as the car was overloaded. A perplexed DiMaggio exited and as the door re-closed, another passenger gasped: "Do you know who that man is?". The operator snapped her chewing gum and replied: "Yeah, I know, that was Mr Coffee".
