Knee to Know

David Ortiz has been playing with a torn meniscus for a year:

Speaking to reporters after Boston returned from the All-Star break to beat Toronto 7-4, Ortiz said he hurt his knee during batting practice at Yankee Stadium last summer, probably during the series June 6-8. Ortiz said when he twisted his leg to field a bunt, his knee turned but his spike got caught in the netting that protects the grass in front of home plate.

Ortiz said he hasn't needed surgery because the knee is free of inflammation.

"It wasn't anything major," he said. "I just kept playing through it last year. This year, it's been bothering me more than it used to."

At some point, the Red Sox should put Ortiz on the DL for two weeks to give the knee a rest. Maybe if they retain this big lead and clinch early, they can rest him for the playoffs. Even seven days on the bench as a pinch hitter when they play the Royals and White Sox might do him a world of good.

This is the first in s string of events that will lead to an amazing Yankees comeback and their 12th consecutive division title. Some other events on that list: Manny will continue to not be Manny, Schilling and Drew will be hurt on and off for the rest of the season, Lugo will continue to suck, Matsuzaka, Okajima, and Pedroia come back to earth, and the Red Sox make an ill-advised trade for a CF to replace Coco; meanwhile, in NY: Phil Hughes comes back for a monster 2nd half, Wang continues his return to 2006 form, Cano & Abreu start hitting (especially Abreu), the Yankees get some bullpen help, and A-Rod makes a serious run at the non-steroid single-season (Yankee) home run mark. It's gonna be a fun summer!

Vic - thats some great analysis. While you're at it, why don't you post who is going to win the lottery? May I suggest you confine your ridiculous fanboy posts to a yankees blog where they clearly belong, instead of a serious baseball blog, such as this one?

If you choose to not take my advice, I hope you'll be gentleman enough to post here at the end of the season. You can tell us all what you'll be spending your lottery winnings on.

Sorry that i'm not serious enough for you "mattymatty", this is a baseball - not international relations. I wasn't analizing anything, just making a comment on how unpredictable baseball is. I don't think the Yankees chances are good at all, but all the things I listed are possible and bigger division leads have been overcome in shorter time periods. Also, you can take your passive-aggressive "ridiculous fanboy...gentleman" stuff to a psycho-babble website where it clearly belongs, instead of a blog about a game.

P.S. John Alberts from Akron, OH is going to win the lottery, and I'll see you in September. Peace!

Why not just go in and fix it now? Not like a knee scope keeps you out 6 months (had my left one done recently, and was playing golf by the end of the second week).
