Cardinals in the Hunt

The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the San Francisco Giants 7-0 today behind equally good pitching by starter Todd Wellenmeyer and the bullpen. The team knocked out twelve hits and drew four walks. The offense has come around, and since May 14th they've averaged over five runs per game. Not surprisingly, Pujols and Rolen have done a good job getting on base in that time.

Unfortunately, the offense hasn't been enough, as they've still played one game under .500 in that time. However, they're just 7 1/2 games out of first place, a deficit they nearly blew at the end of last season. It they can find some consistent starters, they can still make a run at the NL Central.

Don't they have Carpenter coming back soon? That should help. Maybe they'll make some trade on top of it, for a solid 5th starter or something.

one major obstacle for them is going to be the chicago cubs. the cubs already have a multiple game advantage over them and for the past 3-4 years, the Cubs have dominated the head to head matchup.

Too bad TLR gave away the games on Friday and Saturday by bringing Flores (of the 70+% inherited-runners-allowed-to-score) in to pitch in close games with men on base (all of them scored, of course). Both ended up being one run ballgames, with ninth-inning rallies that just didn't quite make it.

That's pretty much been the story this year; one step forward, two steps back, digging deeper and deeper.

ack, just remembered that taguchi blew the friday game. It wasn't Flores' fault. Still, when you have cate, isringhausen, percival and franklin (all with 1.x ERA's) and springer with an 11+ k/9 available in the bullpen, Flores should never pitch in a close game.
