The Cubs defeat the Nationals 4-2 to move to 4 1/2 games behind the Brewers. Bergmann actually outpitched Marshall although both lasted just 5 1/3 innings, but Jason didn't allow a walk. Both left the game having allowed two runs. The Cubs bullpen was better, however, as three singles and a sacrifice fly in the seventh sealed the Cubs victory. Mike Fontenot went 3 for 5 and is now batting .365. Looks like the Cubs finally found a middle infielder who can hit.

The Cardinals turned five double plays tonight in defeating the Diamondbacks 3-2. There was a great example of how luck can change the outcome of a game in the ninth. With a man on first and one out, Drew hit a long fly ball to left center. It was in the air so long Jackson would score easily from first, but the ball bounced over the wall for a double and Jackson had to stop at third. After an intentional walk, Montero grounded into the fifth DP of the night to end the game. The Cardinals pull to 7 1/2 games behind Milwaukee.

This game ended up way closer than it should have been. After adam wainwright pitched 7 innings of gem, only really tarnished by the home plate umpire not giving him anything on the corners, he gave up a double and a walk to start the 8th,

LaRussa's index cards called for a lefty, so he brought in Randy Flores (off of whom 64% of inherited runners have scored this year). Flores struck out the first man he faced, then (surprisingly enough) allowed both inherited runners to score on a triple following a bizarre "strike" call on a ball 2 feet outside (after having 2 strikes on the corners called balls). Both runs were charged to adam wainwright, of course. THEN TLR brought in the right man to relieve flores, and springer (in one of the most masterful pitching performances I've seen) got out of the 8th without allowing a run to be charged to Flores, with an infield pop up and a ground out to second.

So Flores earned a hold, increased his K/9, lowered his ERA, and caused cardinal nation's blood pressure to go through the roof. At least AW still got the win.
