Unusual Win

The Minnesota Twins blew a 9-2 lead today but scored in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Milwaukee 10-9. What was unusual is that Milwaukee hit five home runs today, include two by Hart and number 25 by Fielder. In the 51 seasons covered by the Day by Day Database, the winning percentage when allowing five home runs in a game is .107 (98-820) coming into today. Even in the era of higher offense starting in 1993, the winning percentage when allowing five is just .090 (49-494). The Twins got lucky today.

The Brewers also got lucky -- that Torii Hunter left the game and Lew Ford completely lost a high fly ball -- how many times has a member of the Fielder family hit an inside-the-park home run?
And of course the luckiest of all was Jeff Suppan.

In 2004 Bosox Tim Wakefield gave up 6 HR to Detroit and wound up the winning pitcher, only the 2nd or 3rd pitcher to ever do so.

Lew Ford didn't lose that fly ball. It hit a speaker on the "roof."

"Thank you, Justin," Ford said. "Thank you, thank you, thank you. You're the man. ... I think I was happiest guy in the building."
Does that sound like a guy who was fielding a ball that hit a speaker or a guy who lost a playable ball in the roof (as all the news stories I've read report)?
If the ball had hit a speaker anywhere near where the ball landed (or beyond), I suspect it would have been a no-doubt traditional home run.

I disagree Mark. It wouldn't have been gone. "Too high," as a great baseball man once said.
Question for Pinto: when was the last time there was two inside the parkers on the same day?

didn't the same thing happen in the DET-PHI game friday night? i'm pretty sure the phils hit five homers, all solos, in that one, and lost 12-8...five solos is really unusual

There was a spate of inside the park home runs during one of my seasons at ESPN. I'm pretty sure there were two the same day then. I'll see what else I can find.

What I find most interesting here is that the winning percentage when giving up five home runs went DOWN from 1993 on.
