Washington Sweeps

The Washington Nationals sweep their neighbors to the north, defeating the Orioles tonight 3-1. Not only does it have to be a bit of an embarrassment for Baltimore to get swept at home by a poor Washington team, but tonight they only managed to score one run against Jason Simontacchi despite nine hits and four walks against him in seven innings of work. In all, they put 15 men on base and scored just one run! I'm guessing after this series we'll hear more calls for Perlozzo's head.

That "poor" Washington team now has the same record as those Orioles and is tied for 23rd overall. Not good, but I'm not sure this is a poor team at this point.

Over the last 30 days, they're as hot as anyone.

You oughta take a look at what Dmitri Young has done over the last month. He's batting .477 since returning to the lineup mid-May. Ichiro and Gwynn probably had stretches like that, but I've never seen anything like it up close!

You know, I won't dispute the fact that Nationals are a poor team, but how embarrassing is it when one poor team sweeps another poor team, especially when the sweeping team has been playing decently enough since the end of April? After all, the Nats and the O's now share the same record. Washington isn't going to threaten a playoff run this season, obviously, but given the shriekingly overwrought "HISTORICALLY AWFUL!!" predictions that so many analysts were making in the offseason - and that's before 4 out Washington's 5 starters went on the DL - the homer in me would say that Manny Acta deserves Manager Of The Year consideration if he can get this team within sniffing distance of .500 by season's end.

Ha, Chris beat me to it.

I've said it elsewhere (BBTF), but I'll repeat it here: Chris runs the best Nats blog out there right now. Yea verily, he is the Barry Svrluga of Nats bloggers.

As an Orioles fan, I have to say that it actually is embarrassing to be swept by the Nat-Lights at home. Remember that the O's were in second place and at .500 a couple of weeks ago. Seems like a lifetime now.
