Hit Machine
Placido Polanco picked up four hits tonight to extend his American League lead to 41. He scores one and drives in two as the Tigers defeat the Orioles 5-4. Miguel Tejada was second with 34 hits, and he picked up two more himself.
Chad Durbin's line from tonight is pretty amazing. He only last 3 2/3 innings, throwing 95 pitches. He walked six and allowed three hits, but only two runs.

re: the polanco for urbina deal
in retrospect, this is looking pretty bad.
in the past few years, the phillies have traded way some substantial talent. they dumped scott rolen for Polanco and a couple of bums.
later they dumped Polanco for a half season of urbina, who is now rotting in a venezuelan jail.
rolen was worth 30 win shares a season plus.
polanco was worth 15 win shares a season.
now the phils have wes helms at third who is worth about 3 win shares a season at third.
polanco at third would have been a big improvement over david bell and/or wes helms. plus he would have seen a lot of lefties given the lefty tilt of the lineup.
the phils have also now dumped abreu, schilling, thome among others. these are all players at or near the top of several career statistical categories all time.
also they are 25-30 win share players.
they also foolishly traded johny estrada to the braves for two rent a seasons of kevin millwood.
if you count the jd drew fiasco, the phils could have fielded this team;
jd drew centerfield
pat burrell leftfield
bobby abreu right field
scott rolen 3b
jimmy rollins 3b
chase utley 2b
jim thome or ryan howard 1b
johnny estrada c
assuming the phils had traded thome for rowand, then rowand would have been the fourth outfielder or taken over from JD Drew as he went free agent by now.
this is a far better lineup than what the phils are currently fielding and doesn't have the holes at 3b and catcher that they've been trying to plug with awful players the last six seasons.
lets further say they traded rolen and had not jd drew and traded thome; their lineup could still have been;
burrell lf
rowand cf
abreu rf
polanco 3b
rollins ss
utley 2b
howard 1b
estrada c
this is still a superior lineup defensively and offensively to what they have.
it's no accident that estrada is playing catcher for the brewers and the brewers are suddenly 18-10. the phils could have benefitted from estrada behind the plate.
