Good and Bad
Phil Hughes comes away from his major league debut with positives and negatives. He struck out 5 and walked just one. However, he allowed four runs in 4 1/3 innings, throwing 91 pitches in that time. The Yankees trail 4-0 in the sixth.

I like what I saw. He threw some stellar pitches on the corners and the curve definitely had some batters off balance (not Wells though).
But at the same time there were a lot of fastballs over the heart of the plate and a bit up.
Hughes definitely has the pitches to get people out, as the five K's indicate. He does have to tighten up on the mistakes. Too many pitches were catching too much of the plate. The minor league numbers show good control, so this problem looks fixable.
On MLB.TV the NY announcers were chatting a lot about first-inning nervousness. Maybe. He did seem to settle down afterwards, then sorta ran out of gas.
