Prior Done

Mark Prior is officially done for 2007:

Mark Prior yesterday underwent successful right shoulder arthroscopy performed by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, AL. During the arthroscopy, Dr. Andrews performed a debridement of Mark's right rotator cuff as well as repair of labral and capsular injuries in his right shoulder.

Here's some information on debridement. It sounds like his shoulder was in pretty bad shape. At this point, do fans think he'll ever pitch again?

Nope. Sad to say, but it sounds like he's another Mark Fydrich.

Do you think we'll ever reach a point where a pitcher decides to sue a manager/coaching staff/organization for abuse, which lead to lost earnings?

I'm not a lawyer, but I would say that Prior has a really strong case against Dusty Baker.

Has there ever been a better draft choice than Joe Mauer over Mark Prior? Says something about going for the hometown treat.

Maybe he should become and outfielder.

As a Cub fan, I am angered more by Calfzilla's [have you seen his calves lately? smallish compared to 2003] hissy fit when he was left off the major league roster to start the season than his most recent trip to the DL. Astute Cub followers will tell you that Prior has has a low tolerance for pain and more importantly, looks afraid to pitch. His goose is cooked.

I will be glad the day comes when the Cubs wise up and drop Prior like a bad habit, but like with Kid K they will give him every opportunity to come back.

I hate being a Cub Fan.

Guess he was injured after all, huh? :

More seriously, if Prior takes all of 2007 and part of 2008 to come back, he'll still only be 28. Chris Carpenter, among others, has come back from this surgery, so there's some hope.

As far as Dusty Baker goes, I defy you to find me a manager who would have pitched Prior less in 2003. The Cubs finished ONE game in front of the Astros and THREE games in front of the Cardinals, with a less-than-reliable bullpen. Exactly which games would you have skipped Prior for, or which innings would you have pulled him early, while still making the playoffs? [In fact, after the Cubs' playoff loss, the media was full of love for McKeon for using his starters agressively in relief, and hate for Baker for not doing the same thing.]

Anyone who says they would have rested Prior, pulled him earlier or skipped his starts under those conditions is, um, "mistaken in his mind".

Now, the following years, that's a different story ...

Um... I think the fact that surgeons had to do that to his shoulder indicates that he, uh, wasn't just a sissy, but DID have physical problems that needed fixing.

Why jump to the conclusion that he won't pitch again? It was all done via scope....not a major invasive surgury. Did Dr. Andrews say he couldn't pitch again?

It sounds like all that was done was cleaning out some scar tissue and repair of some ligament damage and damage to the labrum. Notice that it was NOT repair of a torn rotator cuff! All in all, sounds like a pretty routine (by today's standards and particularly for Dr. Andrews) shoulder surgery.
