Power Against Power

Abreu walks with two outs in the top of the ninth, bringing up A-Rod against Papelbon.

Update: A-Rod falls behind 0-2, then grounds to third for a force play. The Red Sox win 7-6, and Dice-K gets the win in his worst start so far.

The Red Sox win the series, but it was close. They win by scores of 7-6, 7-5 and 7-6. It was a fun series, close games, plenty of lead changes, late come backs, and lots of home runs tonight. It's going to be a fun year between these two teams.

Just a tremendous series all around. Naturally, the Red Sox fans are going to be a lot happier about it than the Yankees fans, but the latter should still be able to take comfort in playing Boston so close with a starting rotation cobbled together with spit and wire.

Ironic that Matsuzaka took home a win in his worst start to date, after getting the Ls hung on them in two very good efforts. Still, if nothing else, this game should pretty much put paid to that "Boston can't score with Dice-K on the mound" nonsense.

I know a lot of Yankee fans are going to look at this series as proof that they've got a far superior team, given Boston's inability to really blow them out. And optimisim is fine. But it's worth noting that Boston's OBP for this series was something like .458; they kept getting on, but just couldn't get the big hits. New York's was just .319. Meaning...Boston's pitching actually did a decent job keeping them off base. But once they got on, they were better at taking advantage of it.

A-Rod got on base in 7 of his 14 plate appearances. He drove in 5 runs and scored 5. Not counting the same runs twice, he accounted for 8 of New York's 17 runs by himself. Which is absolutely insane.

I just can't take this Yankees team seriously. They remind me of a much more expensive version of the typical Rangers team: lots of power, don't do anything else especially well, and truly terrible starting pitchers. That bullpen's going to die, with all the work they're getting, and even Rivera is looking mortal. I think this team is very overrated, particularly because of Rodriguez' spectacular start, partly because of all the big names, and also simply because they're the Yankees. Unless things change in a hurry, we're suddenly going to notice that it's July and the Yankees are around .500. That's where this type of team usually ends up.

uhhh.... yeah, big mistake moving papelbon to the closer role... I can really see tavarez holding that lead in the 8th or 9th

If the Yanks ever get their whole team on the field at one time, they have the best team. Doesn't look like that will ever happen. Schilling said the team whose top 5 starters make the most starts will win. If he's right have to like Sox chances.

Heh. Those scores look like a close tennis match.

Boston got on base just under half the time they came to the plate. Most of the time, the scores of these games aren't even close.
