La Russa a Genius Again
The Braden Looper experiment continues to work as the former reliever picks up his second win as the Cardinals defeat the Brewers 10-2. He struck out three in six innings, but he allowed just five hits. Still his strike percentage was low, and you have to wonder how long this will last.
What's more worrisome is Ben Sheets. In his five innings of work he walked three and struck out just two. And since his complete game on opening day, he's been hittable. Ben Sheets at 100% makes the Brewers a much better playoff contender.

The Cardinals have always had success vs. Sheets. Or at least often they have.
Looper has a huge advantage his first trip thru the league. He knows the hitters from his previous role. But he is a different pitcher, starting vs closing. He is doing well, but I expect a significant falloff by the break.
Jeremy, what's the sample size on that?
I am not Jeremy, but Sheets' 4-14 record with four no-decisions in 22 career starts against the Cards certainly supports his point.
By the way, David, La Russa didn't suggest the Looper starting experiment. It was Dave Duncan who deserves your genius points.
