Lower and Lower

The Oakland Athletics pitching staff combined to allow just one run today, allowing a low scoring offense to pick up a 2-1 win. The A's pitchers struck out nine and walked just two, and lowered the team ERA to a mere 2.59. It's tough to believe with that few runs allowed, their record is just 3-4. They've scored 22 runs and allowed 23 in their seven games.

MLB turned the clock back to 1967 today, with a second-deadball-era-like 7.7 runs per game (with the Rangers-Red Sox game yet to go). Offense is way down so far this year, to 8.6 runs per game, so a low team ERA hasn't necessarily been the ticket for a bunch of wins. Lots of pitchers are throwing low-scoring games.

The weather's probably responsible for the weak offense, and dumb luck. Last year MLB averaged 9.7 runs per game, and this year's average probably won't fall that far from it.

Just as I type this Ortiz hits a home run. Maybe the Red Sox and Rangers will manage a few runs.

Catalanotto just went deep, too. Maybe a few runs are on the way. The DH is making this year's offensive totals look halfway decent. The NL really is back to the levels of both deadball levels so far this year - just over eight runs a game. It's like they're playing every game at PETCO...at night...with a humidor.

The A's offense is piss poor... it's amazing to me that they refuse to spend any money whatsoever on some free agent hitters when they have so much pitching talent coming through Oakland.

They replace their pitchers easily, but they rarely invest (long-term) in big time hitting. I understand their financial constraints, but I expect more from Billy Beane. He needs to set his sights higher than simply contending in the weak AL West.

The A's also had five or six unearned runs, so the ERA is a little misleading. That's why they are 3-4, that and pathetic offense.
