Young Runs

The youngsters on Atlanta are pounding the Phillies this afternoon as the Braves sit on an 8-1 lead in the sixth inning. Kelly, Thorman and McCann each drove in two today, Johnson with his first home run of the season. That's three straight games with two RBI for McCann.

re: what seems to be eaton the phils?

well, jimmy rollins said the phils were the team to beat in the NL east.

with an 0-3 record in sight, an early ticket to the basement, and the braves and mets as good as tied for first, and the phillies no better off this year after three games than last year, one has to admit--the phillies are the team to beat, if you want to beat up on a team.

One supposes that there are many criticisms one could throw at Charlie Manuel, but one might be this;

Why in the wild blue yonder are you throwing Adam Eaton, who is expected to be your #5 starter, in your third game, when Jon Lieber is available?

Second, if this is the nature of what we're to expect from Adam Eaton (and he was pounded all spring), we'd best prepare to dump Eaton from the rotation and go with Myers, Hamels, Garcia, Lieber and Moyer.

Speaking of Moyer, why didn't Moyer start today???

After all, he's a lot better pitcher than Eaton.

Because you don't start two lefties in a row?

Well, the braves used to start Glavine and Avery back to back all the time and they won doing it.

Manuel is not competent to manage.

Then, facing a lefty, instead of putting Rowand second in the order, where he has speed, bat control and murders lefthanders, he puts Jayson Werth, who is tall, easy to strike out, and has never show an ability to walk or get a high OBA. The result? Werth goes 0 for 3, while Roward's 2 for 3 with a walk is buried deep in the lineup.

Inference: Werth is Werthless.

And why not play Victorino? He's a lot better fielder than Werth, and a lot better hitter. Since when are we resting 23 year olds two days into the season?

Especially ones who have doubles in each of the first two games.

speaking of managing, did anyone notice that Condrey and his mates today in the bullpen did something the ballyhooed Madsen and Gordon could not do each of the last two nites--pitch two scorless innings in relief?

Madsen has to be the dumbest pitcher I've ever seen in a major league uniform. Everytime he gets an 0-2 or 1-2 count, instead of throwing a curve outside like everyone else, he tries something boneheaded like a changeup that barely changes speed right over the plate belt high like he did in the 11th inning last night, which ended up in the right field stands, hit by a brave who's not known for his power hitting.

the homer was Madsen's fault.

incidentally, Madsen is the first phillies pitcher to lose the first two games of a phillies season since 1977.

All in all, I'd rather seen Virginia Madsen pitching than Ryan Madsen. At least the view would be more attractive and she's a lot smarter than Ryan. Heck, I think she could fool the hitters just with her looks.
