New Ownership
View from the Bleachers notes an AP story on the sale of the Cubs. I'm someone who thought the Tribune company did a poor job of delivering a winner to Chicago. I hope Sam Zell does better. No word on how this might effect the Zambrano negotiations.
Update: I misunderstood the article. Zell bought the Tribune, but he's going to sell the Cubs. Start saving that pocket change for a chance to buy a great franchise!

Sam Zell has announced that he will sell the Cubs after the '07 season. Acrticle is posted on Chicago Tribune website.
Technically, according to the Tribune account, Zell will not buy the Cubs at all; the Tribune Company will sell the team and its interest in the sports-cable channel.
The Cubs' situation is a lot like the Red Sox': storied franchise and ballpark, rabid fan base, major media market. One would think a new owner could turn the Cubs into a top-line money machine, just as John Henry and Co. have done with the Sox. The Tribune Company never seemed to really focus on the Cubs -- either that, or the corporate structure is not conducive to running a baseball team. CBS owning the Yankees (pre-Steinbrenner) didn't turn out too well, either.
With a potential ownership change this fall, there must be even more pressure on Jim Hendry and company to produce a winner right away.
Hey, I live near Wrigley! Now, all I need is a spare few hundred million dollars and I can buy the Cubs!
