After George

Ben Kabak thinks about the post-Steinbrenner Yankees:

But for the fans, as George fades away and the Yanks are left in new hands, we the fans are going to wonder. George Steinbrenner and his wallet provided us with comfort. His spending was our security blanket, and that security blanket is gone. As this era ends and a new one begins, I hope we see smart baseball moves and smart spending. I do after all want that elusive 27th World Championship just as much as the Boss has yearned for it since we were a few outs away in 2001. I want it now.

I don't think anyone could better sum up why the rest of the world hates Yankee fans

The "I want it now" part makes more sense in the context of my analogy. I compare the Boss to Veruca Salt in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We're not that bad, JC!

I grew up 10 min from Yankee Stadium & I say: Poll 100 people and 90 will agree with JC above.
If baseball shared money like other pro sports do, the Yankees would win it all maybe once every 15 years.

Let me see...we are talking about baseball right? And it's still spring training right?

If you don't want your team to win "now", as in this season, maybe you need to take up knitting because you don't sound like much of a fan....

Apparently some people have never seen Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Funny how you always hear about how much the Yankees spend, but the fact that Boston has the highest paid World Series Championship roster EVER goes neglected.

Bob S.: Baseball DOES share money. In fact, not only do they share it, but they also TAX teams that go over a certain limit in their payroll.

Maybe they should... TAX teams for not spending enough? Cut revenue sharing for those teams? Get rid of them? Tampa Bay REDUCED their payroll this year. Florida has won championships but continues to pinch pennies.... for as many teams that spend too much, there are just as many that spend too little.

Maybe instead of everyone worrying how MUCH other teams spend, we should direct our attention to those that claim they are "in the red" and unable to afford a higher payroll (or similar excuses). Force a minimum cap/tax. Get rid of some teams so that there is an abundance of talent and salary sizes will go down (more supply, less demand?)... Don't pick on the teams that try to win by improving their team just because it cost them millions more than your team.

I'm not sure the next owner will necessarily spend all that much less. The YES network and all their merchandise makes a ton of money and there is no reason why they still might not have the top payroll in baseball.

Everyone does realize that Carl Pohlad has a fatter wallet than George Steinbrenner, right? It's just that George is willing to open his wallet while Carl sits on his.

Yanks will still have the top payroll, but they will come back to the pack. If Cashman is as smart as fans think he is they will continue to contend yearly. If not they have the same ups and downs the Sox, Mets, dodgers all have experienced recently. The jury is very much out on Cashman's ability to judge FA talent. As Big Stein fades anyway the Yanks figure to stop eating mistakes.

IMO the free agents will be few & far between from now on - unless he's a 'no brainer' (i.e. a Carlos Zambrano or Scott Kazmir), the talent will be developed from within - at least, they'll get the first shot.

Which is the way it should be...
