And Father is a Major General
Given that Pirates of Penzance is my favorite Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, this may be my favorite post of all time.
(When I was driving from Worcester, MA to Bristol, CT early in my ESPN tenure, a recording of the Kevin Kline version of the stage play fit perfectly into the commute, so at one time I had the whole show memorized.)

I sang Frederic in a production of Pirates of Penzance a few years ago with the Denver Symphony Orchestra.
This summer I'll be doing the Gondoliers. Most of the G&S literature is hilarious and 'Pirates' is no exception.
Gene Scheer was the Major General in the production I was in. I remember him inserting some rather funny lyrics about Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper.
Gene's also a fantastic composer/lyricist who had one of his works performed at the Metropolitan Opera last winter. He can be found here -

Thanks Dave. That was a riot to read.
Great post! I was the Police Commish in a high school production (taran tara!). You're from Worc? The play was at Holy Name.
