Triple Word Score

Javier Vazquez lands a three-year extension from the Chicago White Sox. He'll receive $34.5 million over that time. Not bad for a pitcher who hasn't had a really good season since 2003. Given the deals that Lilly, Meche and now Vazquez, $10 to $11 million dollars per year seems to be the minimum for an experienced, mediocre pitcher.

And yet Schilling isn't worth 13 million for one more year? Not only should Curt go FA he should also stick to his guns about the Home Town discount being gone once the season starts. (FWIW - Vazquez 36 - 37 with a 4.72 ERA last 3 years, Schilling 44 - 21 with a 3.93 ERA and even with the injury pitched only 90 innings less).

Compare the age of Vazquez with Schilling. Plus, Vazquez hasn't really had a truly godawful season, be it injury related or otherwise. Sure, he hasn't been spectacular, but he hasn't had a 5-5 fiasco like Schil's 2005 either. The Red Sox are completely within their rights to see how Schilling does over the course of the season and then offer him perhaps even more than the 13 mil than he would've commanded had he been signed right now to sign him. At least they'd know for sure that he's healthy. They'd look like bigger idiots had they just signed him quickly to an extension in the spring, only for his 40+ year old body to break down on opening day. No way the Sox could take a risk like that.

C'mon--you can't compare Lilly and Meche to Vazquez. Almost 4-1 K/BB and career WHIP around 1.25. He's only 30 years old. Write him down for 32 starts and over 200 IP.

Meche and Lilly have NEVER pitched 200 or more innings in any single season. Vazquez has done it 6 times. Lilly and Meche have 4 CG each in their careers. Vazquez has more shoutouts than that and 20 CGs. Quit looking at wins/losses. It's nonsense.
