More on Matthews

There's new information on Gary Matthews' link to the New York/Florida drug probe:

SI.com: Gary Matthews, Jr., who had a career year in 2006 and signed a $50 million deal with the Angels this offseason, has already been linked to a customer list of a raided pharmacy. Do you have more information on him?

Llosa/Wertheim: Yes. According to law enforcement documents we've reviewed, Matthews is not just on a customer list, as was reported Tuesday. In August 2004, he was allegedly sent Genotropin -- a brand of synthetic human growth hormone typically prescribed to children suffering from growth failure -- at an address in Mansfield, Texas. We traced the address and it is the residence of a former minor league teammate of Matthews', who told us that he is friends with Matthews.

So that's how Gary's name made it on the list. Of course, in 2004, there were no sanctions in place for HGH, so there's not much MLB can do about even if the drugs were intended for Matthews.

Baseball Musings is holding a pledge drive in March.

No sanctions against HGH? How about the fact that it's illegal to take it without a prescription. I guess if he got an illegal prescription, he might be able to skirt the law (any lawyers out there that can clear this up?), but, still, I wonder if the Angels will look to void his contract.

I bet Stoneman and co are regretting this deal right now anyway. I mean, Angels fans were pretty miffed that after being promised a 'marquee' free agent this year, they got handed this guy to begin with. Add this steroids allegations now, and the Angels front office has a long summer full of PR nightmare ahead of them.

re: gary matthews jr.

One supposes if he's been on HGH, we can drop the Jr. and finally just call him Gary Matthews.

Of course, his 2006 season was exceptionally and unusually an outlier in terms of power production.

but let him or her without sin cast the first stone.

Yes, Lisa, we can, because this is not a court of law, it is a court of public opinion. Tell me Lisa, o wise one, who might have any motive whatsoever so, oh, I don't know, use that stuff other than an athlete who stood to make 50 million dollars?????? This is not a rumor, this is a criminal investigation, and this are the facts that have trickled to the public. Why is it that you people are all in favor of giving a multimillion dollar athlete the benefit of the doubt when any idiot can see that GM Jr. is the only one who profits from this type of action. But in your world, Lisa, some janitor is using it get bigger and mop floors quicker and just happened to use his name. Care to buy some land in Florida I have for sale? We Todd Did.
