The Z Money

It looks like Carlos Zambrano is close to signing a five-year deal.

In unrelated news, Zambrano backed off his comments from earlier this week and says they were misconstrued. He also said the Cubs made their first formal multi-year offer "a five-year proposal 'very close' to what the San Francisco Giants gave free agent pitcher Barry Zito this winter. That would mean an offer worth close to $90 million."

If Z is willing to take the shorter deal so he can cash-in again in five years, it seems like the finalizing of a deal is a mere formality.

I'd be very sure of Zambrano's back before I went five years, but given the level of pitching that was getting big money this winter, this deal is almost a steal for the Cubs.

I agree that it's a steal....You have to wonder why Hendry, who is notorious for avoiding arbitration, let it fester even this long to have it come up on the eve of camp.....He was spending money like, my dad used to say, shit through a tin horn. Could he not have foreseen this? Especially after what he gave Lilly and Marquis....Seems like this could have been taken care of last November for 5/75.......Hendry just made a $15 million (at least) blunder....How does someone not get fired for that? Only in corporate America (and the U.S. government).....Ugh...

Am I the only one who doesn't see anything that says this is actually "close"? So the Cubs made an offer similar to Zito's... who says he's willing to settle for that offer?
