The Good Phight suggests a new game for Phillies fans this season, Slamming Pat Burrell (TM)!

I never will understand the Philly fan state of mind. What's so bad about a guy who hits 20+ HRs and drives in near 100 RBIs every year? Yes, he strikes out a lot, but so do a lot of power hitters. I woulnd't put him among the uppermost echelons of ballplayers, but he certainly is better than what most Philly fans think. I guess a lot of animosity comes from the fact that he gets paid like a superstar, which he clearly isn't. But that's hardly his fault, blame Ed Wade for that.

becuase he was the #1 overall pick, was given a contract to match superstar status and looks pathic when he strikes out looking. if you haven't seen it, you should, becuase it can get embarrassing.

to a casual fan he's a bust and isn't trying hard. he won't say much about his injuries, yet goes out partying.

i think he's fine though, especially in this salary market.

also - don't forget that he received standing ovations everytime he came to the plate in 2003 when he hit .210.

re: pat burrell

I've posted this before, the problem with burrell is he's single, lives in the city, and gets seen a lot in bars late picking up single women late at night.

Because of this, philly fans assume he's an alcoholic, a partier or not altogether serious about his game.

Unfortunately the blue collar fans of philly expect that a guy getting $10 million a year to play baseball should go to bed early, not drink or smoke, and get up early in the morning to work out and get ready for the game.

Even thought they loved Lenny Dykstra, who caroused twenty times more than Burrell, Dykstra seemed never to fail in the clutch and always talked a good game and had a lunch pail approach to the game. Plus he was 5' 9" and seemed like a regular guy playing a superstar's game.

Burrell by contrast is a physical specimen who looks like he should be hitting a ton, and consequently the fans don't appreciate him as they should.

he's really quite a good player. He usually is worth between 15 and 20 win shares a season, which is fine among left fielders.

I've seen him crack some very long home runs and he hits them hard and with authority.

I like him as a player, myself.

Also, with all the lefties the phils have, Burrell destroys lefthanded pitching.
