Devil of a Deal

The Cubs pick up two young prospects for Jae Kuk Ryu, getting an outfielder and a pitcher from low in the Devil Rays system. Given how Reinhard and Lopez performed so far, this might be a deal that looks very big in a couple of season for the Cubs.

I'm assuming that is sarcasm. A good deal for the Rays again, getting a decent prospect who's suceeded in AAA and could be a factor in middle relief for the league minimum for two guys who really aren't much in terms of being prospects. Lopez had a good '05 season in a short-span, but losing 150+ OPS points in his second tour in the Appy Lg as a 19 year-old pretty much made him a non-factor.

i was completely against this when i first saw it as a cub fan. i know they had 41 men on the 40 man roster and needed to part with someone, but why not just cut a buck coats and keep a pitcher who has pitched his way to the majors at 23???

but then i noticed Tim Wilken drafted these two guys and he's got a hell of a track record, so i'm going to have to go against my gut and believe that wilken sees something in these two.
Lopez seems like he can get on base so far and he's only 19, so thats a plus...

Lopez is 20, not 19, and looks to be already regressing before he even reaches A level.

Reinhard is 23, same age as Ryu, and is set to start next year in High A.

Wilken may have been a decent Scouting Director for us, but the Rays 2005 draft was filled with tons of "iffy" and "cheap" picks due to the Front Office already knowing they were leaving once the season ended.
