Coach Exchange
The Yankees are going to tutor the Chinese on baseball:
The New York Yankees agreed Tuesday to send coaches, scouts and trainers to China to help boost interest in baseball, furthering a push by the major leagues into one of the world's fastest-growing sports markets.
Under the agreement, the government-backed Chinese Baseball Association will send staff to the Yankees' facilities in New York and Tampa, Fla., while Yankees personnel will assist the Chinese national team and others.
Yankees president Randy Levine said he hopes to start sending coaches and other staff to China "in a few months."
It's a start. I wonder if there will be a class on buying free agents? :-)
"I wonder if there will be a class on buying free agents?"
I think that class will be taught by a visiting instructor supplied by the Red Sox.
seriously, the yankee free agent comments are tiresome at this point. They act within the rules of the game and if you noticed didnt give any of the 10 biggest contracts this off season. So perhaps the cubs, red sox, royals, or giants should be teaching the glass on buying free agents.
i was going to respond to the "I wonder if there will be a class on buying free agents?" comment, but i see the previous two posters have done an excellent job.
get over it, these aren't your older brother's yankees.
Yes, David, just want to echo the excellent comments of the previous posters. This is Cashman's Yankees, or haven't you noticed the changes in approach and attitude? And just as the Yankees were successful in venturing into Japan, this just makes good business sense to try to develop the game in China. This is a long-term plan, obviously, also not a Steinbrenner-type move. But it could very well reap benefits for them, and MLB, down the line. David, when you make such glib comments are you wearing your red socks?
Seeing as this is an article about the Yankees, I don't see why the Cubs, Red Sox, Royals, or Giants should have been mentioned.
Yankee fans seem to be a tad bit sensitive.
Wow, the Yankees fans are very sensitive today. That line can be taken so many ways, the least of which is criticism of the Yankees high spending ways. Maybe I'm praising their restraint this season. Maybe I'm praising the fact that they tend to spend their free agent money on high quality people. Maybe I'm criticizing a communist system in which free agency might not be a well developed concept.
I'm sorry, the history of the last 30 years is the Yankees and free agency walking hand in hand, from the first move for Catfish Hunter, to the good moves like Reggie Jackson and Jimmy Key to the bad moves like Dave Collins and Carl Pavano. Although the Yankees were somewhat restrained in a poor market, I don't expect that to last forever. When someone is available that fits their needs, I'm sure the checkbook will be wide open.
David, yes, your attempt at humor or sarcasm is open to interpretation. Maybe it meant this, maybe it meant that -- you're the source, and you respond as if you don't know what you intended to convey, punctuated with that cute little smiley face. Anyway, the Chinese would probably prefer a class on selling free agents, to any gullible team, whether they're in red socks or pinstripes or whatever the Mets wear.
I'm a Yankee fan and I found it funny. I thought it was a tongue in cheek type of comment. My fellow Yankee fans, don't be so sensitive...Dave is one of the most objective baseball fans. I just hope he downloads all my videos.
I'm with Paris Hilton, I found it funny. Especially when you realize it doesn't even apply this year.
Also, wasn't Andy Pettitte one of the 10 biggest contracts this offseason?
