The Mets are about to lift Willie Randolph's lame duck status:

Randolph and the Mets agreed to a three-year deal yesterday that is expected to lift the manager's salary to $2 million for the 2008 season, sources familiar with the pact told the Daily News.

The deal will take effect immediately. That means Randolph will get a raise from the money he was due this year under the terms of a three-year contract that was set to expire after this season - double that $700,000 sum, in fact.

Another good move by the Mets. Minaya recognizes that taking care of the good people on your team, whether players or staff, is well worth the money.

I love to see the Mets pour good money after bad. Tony Pena could have won 97 games with that lineup last year.

That's pretty silly thing to say NPG. There's more to managing than filling in a lineup card. It can't be quantified, but the regime of Randolph/Minaya has been one of the most harmonious in Mets history. For whatever reason, in whatever quantity, Willie is a factor in that and it's a good thing he was rewarded for it. Who cares about a million bucks in baseball land if you can secure that continuation?

Actually, I think precisely because it can't be quantified it's safe to say that no one has any idea whether being a manager has any more importance than filling out a lineup card and knowing how to make a double switch.

That being said, if I were in Minaya's position I'd extend Willie's contract too. If it ain't broke, don't fix it is quite the applicable saying in this case, and in terms of public relations it's much better for the organization to lose with Willie than without. It's a prisoner's dilemma.

As a Mets fan, I think Willie is as dumb as a mule, but I'm not upset with this extenion. After all, he's only the manager :)

r0n, I'll amend my statement to "what JC just said". Randolph's success is unquantifiable, unless you can assign a number to "Beltran is healthy and Kaz is in Denver".

The money is well spent because it ain't mine!!! Kidding aside, it removes a growiing distraction beofre they hit PSL. Nice deal for Willie, he's not top five, but his salary is. This would have gotten rough, with a potential opening in the Bronx.

On the same subject, where have you gone Jon Heyman??? Another piece of trash, Met hit piece from newsday.com. Wally Matthews rambling like an idiot, showing no grasp of the situtation. And that comes on the heels of Ken Davidoff clownish piece on how Omar should have out bid the giants for Zitopaloza. Random, ill inform bashing from the hometown paper, thanks for nothing Newsday. I'll stick with Joel Sherman from this point forward.
