Not Bad for an Injury
Mark Mulder is going to get a two-year, $18 million dollar contract, despite a torn rotator cuff:
Mulder would not become available to pitch until July at the earliest, club officials believe. Either Wainwright or Looper could be used to hold his spot until then.
And it's not just the Cardinals making the offer. Texas and Cleveland proposed similar contracts. Not bad for a pitcher with a big question mark.
These offers dont make a lot of sense to me, you are receiving at best 1 and 1/2 years of a pitcher coming off of rotator cuff issues for 18 million dollars. A pitcher who really has been in a serious decline since the All-Star break in '04. Unlike elbow injuries, there isnt a lot of success stories when it comes to pitchers post-rotator cuff problems.
Sans a club option for the third year, Mulder simply doesnt provide enough upside for the acquiring team.
This makes the John Thomson signing really, really valuable for the Jays. $500,000 plus incentives is a good deal when you think about what he could end up contributing. Any thoughts?
