Preserving Offense

U.S.S. Mariner looks at how much moving to DH might help Jose Vidro's offense, and finds very little evidence that it will. I'd like to add one more thing to the discussion. Players tend to move from the field to DH when they are older. We'd expect them to be in an offensive decline. When DMZ does his full study, it might be useful to factor that in. Do players that move from the field to DH decline more slowly than players who stay in the field?

One problem with looking at it that way is that players who can stay in the field, do. In other words, the population of players who move to DH could be expected to decline faster in general, since we already know they're not fast enough/healthy enough/talented enough in general to play the field.

re: jose vidro

he's a good hitting, switch hitting, 2b with power.

why in the world would you move him to dh and replace him in the field with a replacement level fielder who might save you 3 games with the glove but cost you ten with his poor bat? Vidro will win you ten with his bat but only cost you three with his glove.

Or something like that. Even in a bad you he's good for 15-20 win shares. That's a lot for second base.
